• Old Vallarta - Most "Mexican" area, lots of restaurants, cafes, cantinas, shopping, art gallerys. Nice place to explore and wander around by foot.
• Nuevo Vallarta - Appx 20 mins from downtown, Lots of big hotels. Nice beaches.
• Bucerias - Appx 30 mins from town. Big Hotels, nice beaches, private.
• Mismaloya/South Side - Appx 5-10 mins from town, big hotels, nice beaches.

If you are an explorer and like to wander around and check out cafes, people, and interesting sites, the closer you stay to town the better. The hotels are smaller in Old Vallarta, but the atmosphere more than makes up for it. More boutique hotels and a more Mexican environment.

For the relaxers who want to be pampered, any big hotel area should do the trick. The hotels in Nuevo Vallarta, the Marina and the South Side are all you need. You may not ever have to leave your resort, they have everything there for you!
