Puerto Vallarta Beaches
The bay is host to a variety of different beaches;
some relaxing, some packed, some desolate, each with
their own style and charm. Here is our guide to some
of the best beaches the bay has to offer.
Playa de Los Muertos |
The most popular beach right
in town. Getting its name (the beach of the
dead) the 1800's after pirates performed several
bloody raids on silver shipments being sent
from inland. Los Muertos stretches for two
miles throughout Old Vallarta. The beach is
thriving and is home the local volleyball court and to the pier. You won’t
be lonely here. Lots of restaurants, vendors,
activities, and people.

Boca de Tomatlan |
Boca de Tomatlan is a small fishing village
located 10 miles south of Puerto Vallarta,
the beach is quiet, relaxed and is located
in a sheltered bay.
Mismaloya |
| Home to the hotel La Jolla
de Mismaloya, and originally claiming fame
with the movie, “The Night of the Iguana”
Mismaloya is one of the most visited beaches
in the city. The water is nice and the sand
and the beach nicer. You can still explore
the old movie set and the view of Los Arcos
is great. You can catch the water taxi from
here to go to other local and more desolate
beaches. There are plenty of restaurants,
activities, vendors and people here.

Boca de
Tomates |
| Located just North of Puerto
Vallarta, at the mouth of the Ameca River,
Boca de Tomates is a fairly local beach. Located
at the end of a dirt road off the highway,
the beach is host to a small fishing village,
a few fresh seafood restaurants and in the
right seasons, surfing. A definite thumbs
up and a must for the adventurous traveler.

Destiladeras |
| A long stretching beach decorated
with rocky cliffs and absolute breathtaking
views of the bay and city make Destiladeras
a favorite beach of many Mexico travelers.
Located 20 miles out of the city on the way
to Punta de Mita, many parts of the beach
are lonely, vacant and tranquil. An umbrella,
cooler, camera and lunch make Destiladeras
a day to remember.
Punta de Mita |
| Located about 40 mins north
of Vallarta, Punta de Mita is famous for relaxed
beaches and good food. Spend the day sipping
Margaritas and looking for good surf. You
can find everything from restaurants to fishing
expeditions here.
Playa Gemelas |
| The perfect beach to take the
city bus to, Playa Gemelas receives less traffic
than the other city beaches. Located on the
way to Mismaloya, the beach is beautiful with
sand and waves to match. More remote, there
are no restaurants or beach vendors. Makes
for a relaxing and peaceful day.
Las Animas |
| A major stop on most of the
daytime Booze Cruises. Las Animas beach is
remote and beautiful. The water is amazing,
the beach equally entertaining and is home
to some tasty restaurants. You can not drive
here, you can only arrive here by boat. Definitely
a great spot.
